The Douar Laaraich Community

#englishstreetclass & The Scorpion Project

Both Villa Noor Essaouira and Mid Century Maroc are located in the tiny hamlet of Douar Laaraich. Becoming connected to our neighbors in a more meaningful way was hugely important to us. What began as a random group of people we would greet and chat with in basic darija (Moroccan Arabic), has become a recognition of family connections. Getting to know them has given a richness to our life here, whether it’s offering someone a lift into town, or taking food to one of the old, uncles who is living alone. Employing from within our local community for our various projects, or placing pressure on local authorities to provide a bus to the children's nearest school in Ounagha.

Throughout our goal has been to have a positive impact on the community that has become our adopted home. As a seasoned volunteer with #englishstreetclass, I’ve been teaching English to children in the Essaouira Medina, and have now added the youth of Douar Laaraich to my weekly lessons.  With various residents of Douar Laaraich, we are also in the beginning phase of launching our social enterprise, The Scorpion Project, whose mission is to work collectively to enhance access to information, health care, education, and employment. Through collaboration and listening to the community’s needs, we are motivated to be a part of improving the quality of life for our neighbors in Douar Laaraich. Stay tuned for ways you can contribute, learn, or just follow along.
